Why this exists
A kid built this to get kids off screens.
Secret Scribe started with a simple idea from its founder, Nixon: the best part of having a friend far away is the mail. Not the group chat, not the feed. The envelope with your name on it and someone else's handwriting inside.
So we built the pen-pal program we wished existed. Real letters, a mystery to solve, and the safety rails a parent would design if they were sitting next to the engineer. Because one was.
Secret Scribe is made by House of Holder LLC in Utah, a family company.
How a season works
Six months. About twelve letters. One big reveal.

A parent signs up
You create the account and add your kid. Kids never get a login. The app hands your kid a secret pen name like Copper Fox.

We match them
With a kid the same age in another town. Neither knows who the other is. That's the whole game.

Every two weeks, a new chapter
A theme, a few starting lines, one clue to plant. Your kid writes by hand, on paper.

Scan it in the app
The app finds the page, straightens it, and sends it on. What they wrote is what gets printed, doodles and all.

Every letter is checked
AI screens it for personal details and anything unkind. If it's unsure, a person reads it. Then it prints on real stationery and goes in the mail.

Real mail arrives
Addressed to the pen name, from a Secret Scribe PO box. Your kid pins the clues to a detective board and logs a guess.

The reveal
After the season, or an approved correct guess, both families say yes. First names and a photo. A real friend.
Between letters: two truths and a lie, a cipher passage, a drawing duel, a puzzle fragment on the back of each page, and a midpoint “almost guess.” Each letter has a job beyond “write something.”
Safety is the product
Safer than the group chats kids already live in.
A person can read every letter before it ships.
AI screens each page for personal details, unkind content, and grooming patterns. Anything unsure goes to a human. If our systems ever fail, the letter waits for a person. It never slips through.
Your kid's name and address never leave your house.
Pen names come from a curated list. There is no box to type a name. The most specific place a pen pal ever learns is the home state. Addresses are encrypted and used only to print the envelope.
You can stop it any time.
Approve letters going out, hold letters coming in, pause your kid, end a match in one tap. Nobody is revealed unless both families say yes. Scans are deleted 90 days after delivery.
Kids under 13 have no login at all. The parent scans, approves, and releases everything, and the kid still does all the writing. Read the privacy policy.
Questions parents ask
Who is the pen pal?
Another kid in the same age band, in a different town, whose parent went through the same sign-up and consent you did. We pair by hand for the founding cohort.
What does my kid share?
A pen name, their handwriting, and the clues they choose: favorite food, a hobby, an instrument, pets or siblings, and their home state. Never a name, address, school, or photo until the reveal.
Can I read the letters?
Yes. You can require approval on every letter your kid sends, hold every letter that arrives until you release it, and read everything in the Family tab. For kids under 13 both are always on.
Who else reads them?
Our screening runs on every letter. Anything flagged goes to our review team. Our print-and-mail partner receives the page image and the recipient address only to print and mail it.
How much does it cost?
The founding cohort is free. We'll ask for feedback, a quote, and an introduction to one other family. Later seasons will be a one-time season pass, priced like a summer camp.
What if something feels off?
One tap in the Family tab ends the match and opens a report to our safety team. Nobody is ever revealed unless both families approve.
